Book Review: City of Ashes, by Cassandra Clare (2008). Book 2 of the Shadow Hunter series.

I was feeling hesitant toward entertaining this instalment of the series, since I found the storyline somewhat awkward to follow. Perhaps it was the newness of the concepts that Cassandra Clare brings to light, but admittedly the second book peeked my interest enough that I will follow through with the series. This book begins with Clary and Simon being in an “on-again off-again” kind of relationship. Which of course means that they really only see each other at night! As expected Clary and Luke (Clary’s ‘adopted’ father/guardian person), are helping Simon through the Vampire transition, which is going as well as can be expected with the characters personality traits.
Meanwhile back at the Institute, Jace is in serious trouble with the Conclave, especially with one very nasty ‘Inquisitor’, a Shadow Hunter by the name of Imogen. The Lightwoods, along with Magnus Bane aid Jace in his quest against Valentine.

Excitement and action spills from the pages of the second book of the Shadow Hunter series. I won’t say that I am completely hooked on the series, but I am not giving up just yet. I did enjoy the tension and taboo love which is seen between Jace and Clary. I would bet that majority of readers are hoping that something is very wrong and they are in fact not brother and sister!

I recommend this book for mid teens and up. The rating – 6/10 stars.
