Book Review: Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, by J. R. Tolkien

What the book is about

The third and final instalment of the Lord of the rings saga, gives us an ending to the destruction of middle earth and the corruption of anything remotely good. In this book, we find Frodo and Sam finally in the midst of mount doom, finally able to destroy the ring.

Aragorn finds his place as king among kings and Gandalf and Shadowfax are reunited and allowed to remain that way. Characters are finally able to find some sort of ending to each of their stories.

What I liked about this book.

I guess after reading the first two novels and watching Frodo and Sam come so close to death on so many occasions that even knowing the ending made me wonder if the pair would be able to endure such tests of will and spirit. I also enjoyed the fact that Gandalf the White rides among them to help the armies won their campaigns.

One other specific moment in which I did really enjoy was the interactions between Legolas and Gimli during their time amongst those who m death had already claimed. The Dwarf tries hard to separate himself from his fears, but like many before him, found his knees felt as though they were jelly!

What I didn’t like about this book.

There really isn’t a lot not to like! It finishes with the destruction of the ring, which in turn stops the total destruction of middle earth.

Overall

I have to say I did have doubts about this series. Having watched the Movie Trilogy a number of times, so spotting the numerous differences and additions along with what was left out of the movie’s became almost a game. I have to admit I was disappointed that certain love stories only existed in the movie. However, the author has written such an entertaining dialogue that it barely matters. I feel that both author and trilogy will remain some of histories longest remembered stories. Overall, I very much enjoyed the third novel, The Return of the King and I am happy I can now say that I have finally read these books. I recommend the book to anyone interested in epic fantasy. I gave this book a rating of 9/10 stars.
